Paris and Normandy River Cruise 2017

Day 1 ARRIVE IN PARIS, FRANCE - EMBARKATION
Arrive in Paris and optional transfer to your luxurious ship. Meet your fellow passengers at the Welcome Dinner. (D)

Day 2 VERNON
Spend the morning enjoying the lovely scenery along the
Seine as you cruise to the provincial town of Vernon. The afternoon brings the chance to visit Giverny. There, you will tour the house and gardens of the Impressionist master Claude Monet. The artist lived here for more than four decades, immortalizing the flowers, footbridges and stone structures of his country estate in some of his most famous paintings, including the renowned Water Lillies series. Day 3 VERNON - CAUDEBEC
In the morning, enjoy the scenery as you cruise leisurely on the Seine. Arrive at the fishing village of
Caudebec-en-Caux from where you have the option of taking one of these tours:
1. Honfleur, a scenic port town with colored houses and favorite subject of impressionist paintings. The town also boasts its St. Catherine church considered the largest wooden church in France. 2. Abbey tour to visit some of Normandy's famous abbeys amiong them Jumieges now in ruins and St. George Bocherville.

Day 4  CAUDEBEC - NORMANDY BEACHES
Tday, you will have the choice of three different excursions to the famed  D-Day sites of WWII. tracing the events of June 6th 1944. We will visit the cemetery at Coleville-sur-Mer, Omaha Beach, the artillery battery at Longues-sur-Mer and the village of Arromanches, where the remains of the floating harbor used during the WWII landings can be seen. As an alternative, you can tour the Gold and Juno beaches in the British and Canadian sectors, where you will visit Ranville Cemetery, Pegasus Bridge, the Canadian cemetery at Beny-sur-Mer, the WWII museum in Courselle, Juno and Gold Beaches, and finally Arromanches. Afterwards, you will return to the ship in Caudebec. A third option is an excursion to rural Normandy, which includes a visit to the Pays d’Auge and “Routes du Cidre” (the Cider Road). You will visit beautiful Norman towns and villages, such as Beuvron-en-Auge, and Cambremer, the Chateau St. Germaine de Livet and a Calvados distillery where you may sample apple cider and apple brandy. Day 5 ROUEN
This morning we have a walk through the medieval city of Rouen and see the monumental Notre Dame Cathedral. painted numerous times by Monet. We stop and see the place with the cross where Joan of Arc was martyred. In the afternoon you will have free time to explore Rouen on you own or you can participate in a guided bike ride along the Seine. (B,L,D)

Day 6 LES ANDELYS -
CONFLANS
Enjoy a scenic cruise to Les Andelys, comprised of two sections, Grand-Andely and Petit-Andely. Located on a bend in the Seine surrounded by white cliffs, Les Andelys is the birthplace of the classical painter Nicolas Poussin. A stroll on the riverside offers beautiful views of the Seine Valley, centuries-old half-timbered houses and the ruins of Chateau-Gaillard perched above the town. The once-massive stronghold of Richard the Lionheart was completed in 1198, and consisted of three different enclosures divided by dry moats. Captured by the French in 1204, it changed hands a number of times during the Hundred Years War, coming permanently under French control in the 15th century. You will tour the ruins of this historic castle on a regular tour or if you prefer, you can hike up before continuing your cruise along the Seine. (B,L,D)


Day 7 CONFLANS - PARIS
Today, you will have your choice of two excursions. The first option is to visit Chateau Malmaison, home to Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte and his Empress Josephine. After Napoleon and Josephines divorce in 1809, she continued to live there until her death in 1814. Todays tour will include the charming chateau, gardens and museum. Alternatively, travel to the town of Auvers-sur-Oise. The town is famous for the number of Impressionist painters who lived there in the 19th century. Among them: Paul Cezanne, Camille Pissarro and Vincent van Gogh. Your Artists Walking tour will include many sites associated with their works, including the house of Dr. Gachet, a famous subject of Van Gogh and the Auberge Ravoux, known as the Home of Van Gogh. The upstairs room, where Van Gogh died has been preserved. He and his brother Theo are both buried in the town cemetery nearby. Arrival in Paris in the evening. (B,L,D)


Day 8
PARIS – DISEMBARKATION
After disembarking the ship this morning, guests participating in the post extension will enjoy a panoramic tour of Paris on which they will see many fantastic sights, such as the Pantheon, Champs de Mars, Eiffel Tower and Arc du Triumph. Afterwards, you will visit one of the city’s most renowned museums, the Musée d’Orsay, built in a former railway station on the Left Bank. Its collection of Impressionist and Post-Impressionist masterpieces is the largest in the world and includes well-known works by Monet, Manet, Degas, Renoir, Cézanne, Seurat, Sisley, Gauguin and Van Gogh. After touring the museum, you will be transferred to your hotel. (B) Additional tours to Versailles, Loire Valley, etc. can be arranged in advance.

Day 9 PARIS
Today is yours to enjoy as a free day in Paris or join  an optional tour. (B)

Day 10 DEPART PARIS
Breakfast on board and optional transfer to the airport or visit the Loire valley castles. (B)
