Mediterranean Cruise
2007
Western Mediterranean & Iberian Peninsula
(Spain, Portugal, Corsica, Sicily & Malta)
M.S. Andrea
May 21-29, 2007 • Aug 29-Sep 6, 2007
9 Days / 8 Nights |
 |
These two cultural cruises — one in late May and the other in early
September — are scheduled during exceptional times of the year to
explore Portugal, Spain’s sunny southern coast and the islands of the
Mediterranean.
Depending on your departure, you will embark and disembark in different
ports, but both programs include Bonifacio at the southern tip of
Corsica; Mahón, a key Balearic Island naval port during the
heyday of the British Empire; sunny Valencia, Spain’s
third-largest city; and Motril, from where you easily can visit the
Moorish masterpiece, Alhambra, in Granada.
Both of these adventures also include Cadiz, port city for the
Andalusian cultural center of Seville; Lisbon, the hilly capital
of Portugal; and Oporto, Portugal’s commercial center and hub of
the world’s port wine industry.
As the Andrea travels along the Mediterranean coastline and
between sun-drenched islands, you'll be following the sea lanes of Roman
galleys, Moorish battleships, Spanish and Portuguese treasure ships and
British 18th-century men-o'-war.
Discover the unique nature of these places, where the colonizing
influences of bygone cultures —prehistoric, Greek, Roman, Norman and
Saracen — are vibrantly alive in the architecture, cuisine and customs
of the present.
In many places, the Andrea docks near the historic center of
town, enabling you to explore on your own, or follow an experienced
guide on a walking tour. In other locations—such as Motril and Cadiz —
optional sightseeing excursions will take you to nearby cities such as
Granada and Seville, respectively.

PORTS-OF-CALL
Bonifacio, Corsica, France
Approaching Bonifacio by ship offers a magnificent view of
dramatic limestone cliffs on top of which lies la Haute Ville,
built on the site of a ninth century citadel. The lively town
below the cliffs is located at the end of a fjord like natural
harbor and is home to local fishing boats as well as yachts and
ferries.
La Coruña, Spain
Nearly surrounded by water, La Coruña has a large harbor and eight
beautiful beaches that encompass the urban center of town. Its
origins are said to be Celtic, and the history of this town is
closely linked with its fishing and commercial trading roots.
Picasso lived here and there are many reminders of the great
painter.
Granada, Spain
Located in the region of Andalusia, Granada is famous for the
Alhambra, a stunning Moorish citadel and palace complex set atop a
reddish hill. Begun in the 13th century, it consists of several
palaces built by different rulers. The romantic design is made up
of columnar arcades, fountains and light-reflecting water basins.
The Gardens of Generalife and the Fortress of Alcazaba also are
worthy sights for the visitor.
Oporto, Portugal
This scenic city is built into the granite cliffs at the mouth of
the River Douro, offering its visitors an array of architectural
gems from the Roman, Gothic, Baroque, Neoclassic and Renaissance
eras. The city is known for its Port wine, and a tour and tasting
in one of the many Port wine lodges is a must. Dominating the
skyline is the 19th-century Ponte de Dom Luis I, a steelwork
bridge built by a disciple of the famous Eiffel.
Lisbon, Portugal
The city at the mouth of the Tagus River launched many Portuguese
expeditions during the 15th and 16th centuries, when Lisbon became
the hub of commerce with the Far East and gold from Brazil flooded
the city. Its oldest neighborhood, Alfama, is a hillside labyrinth
of narrow lanes and stairways, shops, houses and cafes. In the
evening, the sounds of distinctive Fado music drifts over Lisbon,
welcoming its guests.
Mahón, Minorca, Balearic Islands, Spain
Also called Maó, this sun-drenched Spanish port town is the
largest in Minorca and is perhaps the best natural harbor in the
Mediterranean. It was critically important to the British Empire
in the 18th and early 19th centuries. The town is said to be the
origin of a sauce made famous by the French: Mahónnaise. Outside
Mahón, there are reminders of the island’s prehistoric past in the
many stone tayolots and taulas that can be seen.
Seville, Spain
This river city’s centerpiece is the Cathedral, built in the 15th
century and famous for its Giralda, a bell tower converted from a
minaret that was part of the mosque that was originally located
here. The nearby Alcázar, a Moorish fortress built in the 12th
century, also saw Christian modifications made after the
Reconquista. Its gardens are a pleasure to stroll through, as is
the Santa Cruz quarter, with its narrow lanes, flowered balconies,
richly decorated facades and hidden patios.
Valencia, Spain
Spain’s third-largest city is famous for its orange groves, its
beautiful beaches and its delicious Paella Valenciana. Of interest
to visitors is the Gothic Cathedral de Valencia, the silk exchange
or La Lonja de la Seda—now a UNESCO World Heritage Site—the
gigantic Mercado Central and the Calatrava-designed Ciudad de las
Artes y las Ciencias.
Valletta & Gozo, Malta
The Maltese archipelago is comprised of three islands, Malta, Gozo
and Comino, and they boast a long history of domination by foreign
powers, from the Phoenicians in the 9th-century BC to the British
Empire until 1964 when Malta attained independence. Gozo, with its
sandy beaches and rolling hills, possesses a rare, timeless and
genuine quality that is refreshing to visitors. Valletta, called
the “City of Knights” because of its 268-year governance by the
Knights of St. John of Jerusalem, seems to have a museum on every
block. Favorites include the Grand Masters Palace and Armory and
the National War Museum.
